Ice Hockey World Championship 2020 coronavirus

2020 Ice Hockey World Championship would have been hosted by Switzerland from Friday, 8 May to Sunday, 24 May. But the tournament was cancelled due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic on 21 March.

Participants & Tournament Format

The top 13 sides at 2019 IIHF World Championship, along with hosts Switzerland, automatically qualified for the 2020 IIHD World Championship. Belarus and Kazakhstan qualified through winning promotion at the 2019 IIHF World Championship Division I. For the Preliminary Round in a Single round-robin, these 16 sides are divided into two groups

The top four sides of each group qualify for the quarter-finals. The first place side in each preliminary-round plays with the firth-place side of the other group, while the second-place side plays with the third-place side of the other group. Te venues and time slots of the games will officially be announced after the conclusion of the preliminary round.

The top-ranked semi-finalist will play against the lowest-ranked semi-finalist and the second-best ranked semi-finalist will play against the 3rd-best ranked semi-finalist. Both games of semi-finals will be played in Zurich. The time slots of the semi-finals will officially be announced after the quarter-final games.

The winning sides of each semi-final games qualify for the gold medal game while the runner-up sides play for bronze.

Three-Point System

For all games, points shall be awarded as follows.

-Three points are awarded to the winning team at the end of regulation time

-If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, both sides awarded 1 point each.

-An additional point awarded for the side winning the game in a just 5-minute overtime period or the Penalty-shootout if the sides are still tied at the end of the overtime period.

-the losing side earns 0 points in regulation time.

Overtime Operations

If a match is tied at the conclusion of regulation time, a five-minute overtime period shall be given after a three-minute intermission. The sides are not allowed to change ends for the overtime period. The game will end after the completion of five minutes or when a goal is scored by any side, the scoring team will be declared the winner. If no single goal is scored in the overtime periods then the Procedure of Penalty-Shot will apply. All overtime periods of any IIHF round-robin game shall be played with each side against others at the numerical strength of three skaters and one goaltender.
