A Bief history of Association Football
Football is also known as association football and soccer. The sport of football is played with two teams having 11 players each, the player can use any part of their bodies except their hands and arms and try to maneuver the ball into the opposing team’s goal. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to handle the ball with hands only within the penalty area surrounding the goal. The team that scores more goals against an opponent wins the match.
Football is the world’s most popular ball game, played by over 250 million players in over 200 nations and has the highest television audience in overall sports. The sport of football can be played almost anywhere from official football ground to gymnastics, school, playground, street, parks, and beaches. Globally, the governing body of the association of football is called Federation International de Football Association (FIFA).
3000 Year History
Football has been playing for over 3000 years. Nobody can exactly tell, where the first football match was played. Some evidence shows that it was played in China, Japan, Greece, and Rome. But modern football started in Britain in the 19th century.
The first football match was played by the locals in the east of England with the severed head of a Danish Prince they had defeated in a battle, although football was known as a war game. In medieval times, punching, kicking, gouging and biting were allowed while playing football game. So, King Edward III and Queen Elizabeth tried to ban football games, but couldn’t stop it due to the popularity of football games.
Eton College ( the famous English school) establish a set of rules for the football games in 1815. In 1863, the football association was founded and the students at Oxford University created a shortened form for the word association and the word soccer war created. The English football league was created in 1888 with 12 founding clubs.
International organization (FIFA)
Football had become more popular and spread across Europe in the early 20 century, so it was in need of an international organization. Therefore, in 1904, the football representatives from the football association of Denmark, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, and Switzerland founded the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA).
Although in 1906, Englishman Daniel Woolfall was elected as FIFA first president and Great Britain were admitted as members by 1911. In the International Board meeting, FIFA members accepted Britain’s control over the rules of football, which had been established in 1882.
